Fishing on our canals and rivers is not only a great way to unwind but also an opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and enjoy the fresh air that surrounds these beautiful waterways. Whether you are an experienced angler or a complete novice, our fisheries and angling team here at Angling Books Publishers is here to provide you with all the essential information you need to embark on your fishing journey. We have simplified the process into six easy steps that will guide you from the very beginning to a rewarding fishing experience.

1. Get a rod licence

Before you can cast your line into the water, it is crucial to obtain a rod licence. This legal document is required to fish on any canal, river, reservoir, or lake, granting you the right to use a fishing rod or pole along with a line. It’s important to note that anyone aged 13 and over must possess a valid licence, which is provided free of charge for young anglers aged 13 to 16. Securing your rod licence not only ensures that you are fishing legally but also contributes to the management and conservation of our aquatic environments.

2. Get a permit

In addition to a rod licence, you will need a permit that specifically allows you to fish in a particular stretch of water. Generally, this involves reaching out to the local angling club, which manages the fishing rights for their designated areas on our behalf. With hundreds of clubs spread across England and Wales, finding the right club is easy. Simply visit our fisheries list, input the location where you wish to fish, and you will find the contact details for the nearest club. For locations that are not under the jurisdiction of an angling club, you will need to obtain a Waterway Wanderers permit from us. This permit allows you to fish in the stretches of our canals and rivers where we directly manage the fishing rights, ensuring that you have access to some prime fishing spots.

3. Learn to fish

Before you head out to the water, it is highly advisable to familiarize yourself with the basics of fishing. Our collection of fishing skills videos is an excellent resource, offering valuable tuition and tips for both complete beginners and those with prior experience in canal angling. These informative videos are presented by Simon 'Motty' Mottram, a renowned canal fishing champion and consistent medal-winner in National championships. Additionally, we host free Let's Fish! sessions that provide an interactive learning environment with one-on-one support from experienced local coaches. These sessions are typically available from spring to autumn, so be sure to find your nearest Let's Fish! event and secure a booking. Furthermore, take some time to read through our guide to good fishing practices to ensure that you are fishing safely and responsibly, keeping both yourself and others around you safe while enjoying the sport.

4. Know your fish

Congratulations on your catch! But wait, what exactly have you caught? Identifying your catch is an important part of the fishing experience. Our fish species pages provide detailed information about the various types of fish that inhabit our canals and rivers, allowing you to recognize and learn more about your catch. You might be surprised to discover the incredible diversity of fish species that can be found in these waterways. One of our key responsibilities is the conservation and management of wild fish stocks, not only in our canals and rivers but also in our commercial fisheries. This commitment ensures a healthy ecosystem and sustainable fishing practices for future generations.

5. Making life better by water

Fishing is not just about the thrill of the catch; it is also a wonderful way to forge new friendships and connect with fellow anglers. The fishing community is known for its camaraderie, with many anglers eager to share their experiences and fishy tales. Spending time by the water, surrounded by nature, provides a peaceful retreat that is beneficial for your mental and physical health. The tranquillity of the canal bank, coupled with the opportunity to observe local wildlife, creates a rejuvenating environment that promotes overall well-being. So grab your fishing gear, and prepare to enjoy the many rewards that come with fishing on our canals and rivers.
